Prehistoric Bones & Stones Hike

$299 per person | 9 hours

Spend the day with a local expert exploring the prairie lands out near the Badlands. Learn the history of the prehistoric creatures that roamed this area millions of years ago. The amazing Badlands guide will point out fossils that most people will never have the opportunity to see (no fossils may be touched or removed). You will spend time in the agate pits on the prairie looking for the illusive Fairburn agates. If you find one, you get to keep it! (Quite a prize!) This tour is not for the faint of heart. This is a full day of hiking and adventuring!

The Badlands were established as a National Monument in 1939 and re-designated a National Park in 1978. In addition to the other-worldly pinnacles and spires, the Badlands also contain the United States largest undisturbed mixed-grass prairie and are home to wildlife including buffalo and Bighorn sheep. Because of how the Badlands were formed, you will see a variety of fossils from seashells and turtle shells to large jawbones that belonged to prehistoric creatures. Remember – it is against the law to remove anything from the Badlands, so please take only pictures! 🙂

“Our whole family enjoyed the tour given by Carrie, owner of Black Hills Adventure Tours… She totally catered the day to our interests… She also arranged for our girls to have a one-on-one experience at Reptile Gardens the next day!”
